About Us

Zenji Hanaoka established Hanaokazenji-Shoten in 1961. He became independent after working for his father, Shigeo Hanaoka’s nori wholesale business established in 1906.
We continue the family business as second and third generation from Zenji in Hamacho Nihonbashi, protecting the tasting skills that we have inhereted. Acquiring quality nori from around the country we offer nori at a reasonable cost as possible to our customers.
Acquiring nori takes place during the wintertime. We like to think of it as encountering nori that leads us to meeting our customers. We work hard to maintain and build new relationships with pride to protect and pass down the traditional taste of nori.

History of Laver (Nori-Dried Seaweed)

Enbedded in quiet waters of coves along the coastline, gifted with the blessing of the sun and tides bringing in nutrition, seaweed is nurtured during autumn and winter.
In the Genroku years (beginning of Edo period1688-1704), it is said that nori became the thin squared shape that it is in today, which was called Asakusa Nori.
There are 2 theories to why it was called Asakusa Nori. One is because the Asakusa Nori was invented to be made with the same method as Asakusa paper. The second theory is because Asakusa Nori was made from seaweed farmed in Asakusa.
During the Edo era, nori was farmed mainly in the current Tokyo Bay area, also processed within Edo (old city of Tokyo) and therefore considered a delicassy of Edo.
In the Meiji era (1868-1912), with the Civilization and Enlightment (end of isolation period) the consumption level of nori went up and areas of seaweed farming increased, including neighboring Chiba prefecture. By mid Meiji era, nori became commonly known in the Tokyo area.
During World War 2, nori was selected as one of the foods to be distributed to the people by the government and became widely known throughout the country. After the war, Nori continued to be a popular gift of Tokyo.

History of Nori Wholesale

It is said that nori wholesale business started in the Edo period. It was a profession to buy nori from farmers and sell them in moving carts to the citzens of Edo.
They evolved to set up shops in the current Nihonbashi area which was a big food market to sell nori mainly to Edomae-Sushi (current form of sushi started in Edo) places.
Until mid Meiji era, nori was handled together with eggs and dried Bonito shavings. With the rising popularity of nori as a delicassy, by mid Meiji era wholesale businesses specializing in nori started to appear.
With time, the changes in the climate and evolution of skills in seaweed farming made it possible to farm in other parts of the country and nori wholesale business adapted to this change and transformed itself to its current form.
